<< Deathseeker - An Original Comic Script

Origin of Deathseeker

I was inspired to come up with Deathseekers when I was brainstorming for ideas for a new webcomic. Death, as presented in Gaiman's Eternals, has always charmed me, and this is not the first time I tried to write Death into my works. The other times, of course, are still somewhere in my digital mess, collecting digital cobwebs. Strictly speaking, Death in this story is nothing like the one in Sandman, except that they are both female, and share a curiousity in mortality. Beyond that, my Death is really a cold, whimsical one, who draws entertainment from humankind's bemusement.

At the time, I wanted to do a fantasy setting, but I was tired of the old elemental magic forms, and wanted to try a different kind of magic. Hence, spirit magic presented itself with an interesting possibility. However, despite the shamanistic roots I'm drawing from, I'm trying to steer away from traditional animalistic and nature-based magic and explore more random possibilities. The main force of magic is not so much through spells, but through physical manifestations of spirit guardians, reinforcing the idea of spirits and death.

The heroine of the story, Dovril, took me some time to figure out, but is also one that I find most interesting and potentially difficult to write for. I didn't want this to be a combat slugfest, with grand fights lurking around every corner, and my invincible heroine striking down all foes who oppose her with impeccable ease. I wanted a non-fighter, someone who didn't use her brawns to drive the story forward, but instead asked questions. She is the curious one, the one who asks all the simple and the difficult questions, who never stops at a single 'why', following each answer with another question. I wanted this to be a thoughtful piece, about life and death, and I wanted my heroine to reflect that.

Still, a comic is a comic, and one of the main draws and the reason I will enjoy writing this piece, is in the creating of enemies and allies to spice up Dovril's journey. It's a story that involves Death, which means sonner or later, someone has to be killed. So do expect some interesting battles, as well as some thought-provoking moments, at least as much as I can try to make it happen.

And at the end of the day, I hope you'll enjoy reading Deathseeker as much as I enjoyed writing it.
