A little boy thought it was a good day to do some exploration, so he decided to take a trip to the city on his own for the first time. Taking his newly bought concession card that his mommy just got for him, the little boy embarked on what he hoped would be an adventure he could boast about to everyone later.
Along the way, the little boy saw many wondrous sights, majestic buildings, fast vehicles, and interesting people. He stared at each and every one of them with wonder and excitement, drinking in all the sights and sounds to his heart’s content. All too soon it came the time to go home, and the little boy when back to his cozy little home to tell his mommy all about it.
Rushing back into the house, he saw his mommy in the kitchen, and ran to her shouting, “Mommy mommy! I saw so many interesting things today!”
His mommy set her things aside on the kitchen table, and squatted down to look the little boy in the eye. Patiently, she said, “Tell me all about it then, my dear little boy. Tell mommy what you saw.”
Eagerly, the little boy began.
“Well, when I was entering the train station, there was this dark man who thought the auto gates were racist!” The little boy exclaimed excitedly.
“My dear boy, machines are not racist, only people are,” his mommy said lovingly, her hands gently caressing the cheeks of her little boy.
“But it’s true, I tell you!” The little boy replied, brushing away his mother’s hands.
“He held his train pass in his hand, but he kept looking and staring at the gates, never entering them. Finally, another dark man entered and went past the gates. Then only did he quickly follow that man and went through the gates at last.”
“Perhaps he wasn’t sure what to do, little boy,” his mommy said as gently as she could. “Sometimes people just need others to show the way. You will be a good little boy and do that next time, won’t you?”
“Yes mommy, I will!” The little boy answered emphatically. “But he could have just asked around, couldn’t he?”
Smiling at her little boy with love in her eyes, she replied, “People can be shy, like you were on your first day of school. You wouldn’t let go of my hand at all, remember?”
She tickled her little boy’s chin, and he burst out giggling. “Now tell me, dear boy, what else did you see?”
Still giggling, the little boy tangled himself up in his mommy’s arms, while he continued his story.
“After I got off the train, I wandered around the stores and saw a lot of cool gadgets. As I was coming out of this building, I saw a security guard telling jokes to passers-by!”
The little boy turned around to look at his mommy with a puzzled expression.
“Aren’t security guards supposed to be fierce, mommy? They have to scare away all the robbers and bad guys, right?”
“Now now, a security guard’s job is to make people around feel safe,” his mommy nodded her head at him, eyes twinkling as though revealing a secret. “How else better to make people feel safe than to have a few laughs with them?”
The little boy thought for a moment, and snuggled back into his mommy’s arms. “That’s why I feel soooo safe when I’m with you, mommy!”
His mommy laughed a cheerful, sparkly laugh.
“That’s right, my little boy, we don’t always have to be fierce. Being nice to others will make them nice back to you. People won’t want to do bad things to you anymore if they feel nice about you.” She rubbed her face into his tummy and made him squeal in delight.
“Go on with your story,” she panted when she was done, falling back and sitting onto the floor instead.
“Okay!” The little boy was in a very happy mood now, recalling all the stories from his little adventure. He continued telling his mommy about all the strange sights and sounds he saw as he wandered around the busy bustling city. His mommy listened on patiently, encouraging him and answering his questions.
“I was coming back on the train when I saw this strange man standing in one of the cars.” The little boy was sitting on his mommy’s lap now, his face scrunched up in a serious look as he tried to recall the man’s features.
“His skin was funny. There were many big bits of flesh growing all over him, like small flesh marbles stuck onto his face, his arms and his body. I could even see some of them sticking out from under his shirt! Gross!” The little boy closed his eyes and shook his head to shake the image out of his mind, making retching noises in the process.
“Shhh…” His mommy hushed him. “Do you know why he looks like that, then?”
The little boy stopped shaking his head and looked up at his mommy curiously. “No, mommy. Tell me why.”
“I don’t know, dear boy.” His mommy looked thoughtful. Then suddenly she turned and looked at him mischievously. “Maybe because he doesn’t like to bathe, like you, you dirty fellow!”
The little boy shrieked and tried to escape from his mommy’s tickly fingers, as she tickled him all over again.
“But, just because my little boy is stinky and smelly and doesn’t like to bathe, that doesn’t mean I love him any less, right?” His mommy said very warmly to him.
“I hope not, mommy, coz I love you too!” He replied and buried his face into his mommy.
Carefully prying him away from her, his mommy looked gently at him and said again, “So even though the man has funny skin, that doesn’t make him any more different from us, my little boy. I’m sure someone else loves him as much as I love you!” She touched her finger on his nose to emphasize the point.
“Oooh… Who would want to hug such a funny skin like that?” The little boy asked.
“Who would want to hug this stinky little creature here?” His mommy asked him back, and the two burst out in laughter.
“That means I don’t need to bathe anymore, since mommy will always love me!” The little boy exclaimed in delight.
“Don’t you dare try that on me, you cheeky little boy!” His mommy chided in mock anger.
“Yes mommy, I was just kidding.” He pondered for awhile. “I think that strange man should get a bathe too then! Whoever who loves him will love him even more when he’s all nice and clean!”
His mommy ruffled his hair and said, “So, does that bring your journey to an end at last?”
“No mommy, there’s one more!” The little boy pulled his mommy back onto the floor just as she started to get up.
“On my way out of the train station, I dropped my pass card, and I picked it up again. But once I was out, this pretty lady kept smiling at me.”
“That’s because you’re a cute little boy!” His mommy teased him.
“No, no, that’s not it,” he continued undeterred. “She came up to me and asked me if I picked up two dollars or ten dollars. She said she had just dropped a ten dollar note into her bag, and if any money fell onto the floor, it could be hers.”
His mommy looked at him sternly. “So did you pick up any money?”
“I didn’t, mommy, I didn’t!” He replied in earnest. “I picked up my pass card that I dropped, and she thought it was her money. I showed her my pass card that I picked up, and she smiled at me again and went away.”
“First of all, never ever take any money you find and keep it for yourself okay?” His mommy looked at the little boy very seriously as she spoke to him. The little boy nodded obediently.
“That’s my little boy,” she said comfortingly, as she hugged him close to her chest, and began rocking him back and forth.
“There are many things we should be careful about, and of course, that includes our money.” His mommy said.
“But never forget that it’s not the only thing we should be careful about, okay?” His mommy looked at him again. “We should always appreciate the things we have around us, so that we will not feel bad when we lose them.”
“Yes mommy,” the little boy replied. “I will never want to lose you! I will be very very careful with my mommy!”
His mommy threw her head back and laughed another silvery laughter. “One day, we must all lose something. But in the mean time, treasure every little thing you have, little one. I’ll hold on to you as tight as I can, alright?”
“Now, go along now, and take your bathe. Dinner will be ready very soon. Go quickly and be a good little boy.” His mommy stood up and gently pushed him along. She smiled as she watched the back of her little boy leave the kitchen.
The little boy felt very happy and proud of himself, for he had traveled to the city alone, and told his mommy stories about all the things he had seen. He felt a little more grown up, and was sure that mommy felt that way too.
But most of all, he was happy because his mommy sat down and listened to his stories, and he knew he loved his mommy and his mommy loved him very very much.
